This will self destruct in a few hours. Sorry yall, I don't have the time to blog, work a fulltime job, and share one computer with my family and run a blog. My other blog is linked to a ministry opportunity for churches to view. This blog was a humble attempt to wave an arminianistic flag. It grew out of a particular need. I namely got tired of calvinism, and the fact that African American calvinist were basically blogging and writing books, with the tone that the way to strengthen churches in the African American culture and context was thru calvinistic reformed theology. I got sick of the calvinistic dog wagging the biblical tail, with the old line of calvinism is the gospel. So, I wanted to share some thoughts from an arminian perspective. There are plenty of african americans in the AME church, Church of God in Christ, and various Baptist Churches, (ABC, NBC, SBC,) that would agree with me theologically. But for whatever reason, many don't identify as Arminians. One would be surprised to see the great number of african americans that reject calvinism on hearing of its tenets (the tulip) and many are bright enough to know and understand it's a drag. Now if you are brother chomping at the bit to respond, because your view is calvinism, I'm sorry I am not hear to debate, just to say goodbye. You had a chance to interact for 3 years and didn't and that was your lost. To my arminian friends, don't despair I haven't reject arminianism, I just don't have the opportunity to put up regular post. So I bid you farewell.Please adjust me as your blog link. Sharing A Few Thoughts

I was perusing the "net" in search of seeing what some of the brethren in ministry was teaching on and decided to visit an website I had frequented often a few years ago. It's a pastor in the California area. He had spent some years on christian radio. It was good to hear an articulate and educated brother from the inner city, on the radio preaching. In the early 90's this brother was know for airing radio broadcasts of the church service. Mind you not the announcements, or the choir but rather the preaching.

The exposition of a text. This was sort of rare in the inner city and other places for that matter. Usually, there is an emphasis on the emotions over exposition in a lot of churches, very much so during the early 90's. It was rare in fact that most churches in the suburbs as well, would deal with anything other than some topical preaching. Which I am not against by the way, as long it relates the passage, stays away from eisegesis and heresy.

However, this brother would literally light up the airwaves with solid preaching. But, that was not enough. He felt the need to interact with his audience in another way. Live radio would be the format. Dealing with biblical and theological issues. As a co-host the brother truly encouraged me to dig deeper in the word. To get my hands on bible study tools, to think through the text before you got up speak.

There was something about being passionate about the truth. And there was no surprise when the brother would lead his own radio show. And for a few more years it was a blessing to hear the brother on the radio deal with matters of biblical issues. And to attempt to defend the faith. However, I don't if it came through the process of time, or spending too much time being overly analytical. Now I don't mean that there's anything wrong with correcting false teaching, word faith heresy, or disagreement with charismatic theology. I even understand that there is a need to come on strong at times. But we cannot fall into arrogance while correcting error, even stating our position. At times not having the compassion or even the tact deal with people saved and unsaved, like Colossians 4:6 letting your speech be seasoned with grace.

We cannot talk over people while they are talking, yet this is what this brothers live radio show ended up doing. Yes, he eventually (rightly so) came off the air.

He has since resigned also from the church he was pastoring via some unnamed impropriety (his own words).I personally believe from his own accounts it was profanity and threatening violence with another man in the church. He went on to another ministry attempting to function under a plurality of elders, and was asked to leave there too.

All the while others according to this brother was wrong but never himself. Rather, he was always biblical, and Pauline in his theology. On every occasion others were in error. And when I pass by the website today of a pastor that used to minister to several hundred people, teaching classes in the church, thriving on air ministry reaching the lost and teaching the saved, appears to be a bitter old man. But please know I am still praying for the man. But there's no talking to him you see because he was always right.

Now mind you he's still pointing out errors of a few Word Faithers (rightly so), but yet still not dealing with ortho-praxy, waving the flag of orthodoxy. But the two should go hand in hand. One cannot believe all the right doctrines (by that I mean the essentials of the faith), and be a cold hearted individual. Correct doctrine (see above reference) has lead to correct behavior. Whether you are Lutheran, Biblicist,Baptist, Calvinist, Arminian, Fundamental,Charismatic, or just consider yourself Evangelical.

Anyway this was a classic case of becoming bitter in ministry. I don't think that it was an overnight case of bitterness, but rather the root, took stalk and became a mighty oak. As we get older, I understood that everyday with Jesus was to get sweeter than the day before. But we know this is not always true in every case. Trials in life can make us bitter or better.

I am sharing my thoughts as a warning to myself and others. Let us not grow weary in well doing. Let's hold fast to authenticity and accountability. It doesn't matter if you do apologetics, or you are polemical (debaters) and you love to go at in the Calvinism vs Arminian sphere.

We cannot allow our education, articulation, speculation, theology, or our particular views, no matter which camp we find ourselves in to cause us to become so polarized around our view, that we do show others the love of Christ. We can't just verbalize a love for Christ and others, it has to show. Those are some thoughts on being bitter.

Ironside Nailing It

Man what a name for a preacher or a detective, or even the ship "Old Ironsides" for that matter. Anyway stumbled across something that was extremely intersting from H.A. Ironside I hope you will enjoy. I picked this up from another's website. I found it to be intriguing. The initial article was called "Ironside On Calvinism" my thoughts are actually he's being biblical.

"Turn to your Bible and read for yourself in the only two chapters in which this word predestinate or predestinated is found. The first is Romans 8:29-30, the other chapter is Ephesians 1:5 and 11. You will note that there is no reference in these four verses to either heaven or hell but to Christ-likeness eventually. Nowhere are we told in scripture that God predestinated one man to be saved and another to be lost. Men are to be saved or lost eternally because of their attitude towards the Lord Jesus Christ. Predestination means that someday all the redeemed shall become just like the Lord Jesus"

"D.L. Moody used to put it very simply the elect are the 'whosoever wills' the non-elect 'whosoever wont's'. This is exactly what scripture teaches, the invitation is to all, those who accept it are the elect. Remember, we are never told that Christ died for the elect".

Looking For A New Church Here's A Thought

A Concept For The Church Searcher

I would like to make a suggestion for those that are looking for a new church. If you are new in the area and are looking for a new church this may not apply to you. But if you are concerned about lost souls coming to Christ. You would like to see a different worship time. You want leadership with integrity, or you may want to do some leading yourself. And you are not getting this from your current church, here's a thought: Try starting a church yourself!

Church Planting

This concept is called church planting. I am in no way trying to empower the troublemaker. If you are the source of trouble in a bad way it doesn't matter where you go the problem will follow you. And the other hand if you know that the church isn't meeting a legitimate need in your community, perhaps it's time to prayerfully consider leaving, and instead of going from place to place, perhaps you and a few others can get together a start from the ground up.

It is a challenge, but with God all things are possible. It doesn't take a pastor to start a new church it takes the Lord and willing people. It doesn't matter what part of the United States or the World for that matter you can get started anywhere, any time with prayer.

Isn't it time that you looked up and saw the church be what God intended it to be? Are you uncomfortable with a holy-discontent? You want more out of your service? Do you see that the teaching isn't feeding you? Do you see the pastor is dead set in the wrong direction, and the church is more interested in satisfying itself, than reaching out?

Are you tired of seeing more in reach, by that term I mean; church work, as opposed to the real work of the church? You know what I'm talking about, building up the believers, and reaching the lost. Church campaigns, and programs.

As opposed to a lot of meetings, pastor's anniversary celebration, usher day celebration, youth day celebration, women in red, women in white, all celebrations, with messages tailored to make you feel guilty about not giving to those things. You can't afford a new outfit for those special events but your church insist on having them, you would feel better not attending them. And in your mind it's time to go.

Here's another example: The sermon no longer fits the bible so the pastor using more than one translation to get the point across. You see vision statements, mission statements that are similar to what you see in the office at work. You hear talk at some of church meetings that sounds no different the the business meeting at work, and you wonder where does God fit in this? Your Sunday morning worship has left the building, and is tailored toward the "unchurched" and seeker, and you are asking yourself, should I stay or should I go? Might be time to leave friends.

Prayerfully, consider leaving for a good and godly cause. Having done all you can, prayer, fastings, talked with other friends and maybe even the pastor himself.

And if you are convinced by the Spirit of God, your time is up. Perhaps it's time to start a new church instead of trying to find one. Pray about it. Write down what you would like to see, take a step of faith.

It doesn't take a pastor to start a church, just the Lord and a willing heart. This might be your wake up call. If you need some help with this there's a lot info out there, Baptist, Methodist, Assemblies of God, Nazerene.

Strange Phone Call

Friends please be careful with your information online. I have my info up for ministry opportunities for churches that are seeking a pastor. I received a phone call thinking that someone saw my information and was interested in making a connection. The person never came out directly saying what they wanted and appear angry the entire time. I was attempting to be graceful because the saw my ad on a website. I'm trying to get to the bottom of where the individual was coming from and immediately, there was a fussing mindset.If my information is out there on a website for the express purpose of being contacted by a church for pastoral ministry that's what it is there for, contact for a pulpit search team, or a denominational leader. If a seeker, or non-christian has a question, pose it, but don't be deceitful giving the impression of a curious minded person, that took a phone number from a website that is for men seeking ministry. It was a Jehovah's Witness. Trying to argue against the trinity. In an arrogant manner no less.

Dialogue Yes - Fussing No

I will dialogue with anyone about theological issues. I don't mind a debate with anyone. I don't mind a discussion. But please don't come to my blog to fuss. Don't go to anyone's blog to fuss. Argument is used logic as a well reasoned answer via intelligent discussion. Discuss yes. Debate yes. I am not an expert in the art of polemics, but at the very least say what you mean and mean what you say. Have some integrity. I can tell the different in a learner, debater, or a seeker.

This was what I would consider a satanic attack. I don't know if JW's are trying to step up their game. But that was deceitful. Honest dialogue will go further. If anyone with an opposing position, wants to debate, practice having some tact. I call this post beware of dogs. Because they are out there, barking. Now, notice this blog isn't called the heart of the debater. There are tons of ministries out there that do it.

I don't mind a debate, but as I get older I realize that people in the church in a shepherd willing to feed and guard the flock from the wolves. And I understand wolves try to come in sheep clothing, that's what you do as wolf, but notice a discerning christian can smell a wolf out before it approaches the flock.

Just a heads up for my friends. Oh, wolves this shepherd keeps a staff, and doesn't mind using it on you.

On Being Evangelical

Evangelicalism is the term applied to a number of related movements within the Christian church. They are bound together by a common emphasis on what they believe to be a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a commitment to the teaching of the New Testament. Evangelicalism is usually associated with a type of preaching that calls on the hearer to confess his or her sin and believe in Christ's forgiveness.

Evangelicals typically believe that each individual has a need for the new birth and personal commitment to Jesus Christ as savior, through faith in his atoning death on the cross (commonly, although not necessarily, through a specific conversion experience). They emphasize orthodoxy on cardinal doctrines, morals, and especially on the authority of the Bible. Many Evangelicals follow a traditional, literal interpretation of the Bible and insist on its inerrancy ( meaning freedom from error in history as well as in faith and morals). Although, not all evangelicals take the same views on inerrancy.

This short post is however to affirm the term evangelical, because some of erred concerning the truth, and while others may expand or expound the term better, I'm not ready to throw it out altogether,regardless of the media's negative spin, the emergent church, the liberals (PCUSA, ELCA, some of the Episcopalians), the political machine, or any other outside force or those within the camp. I still choose to be identified as an evangelical.

All And All You're Just Another Brick In The Wall

There are some things are really wish I didn't have to do. One of those things is to discuss race. People in my culture err in two extremes. One we get too "black". In other words we put to much of an emphasis on being black. Not merely race or skin tones per se', but I am speaking of the culture, this is what I mean by blackness. The language, slang, food, some of the music, is basically Afro-centric to the exclusion of other cultures. And at the same time the reasoning is troubling, because the thinking and "speech" is we don't get a fair and/or equal opportunity because we are ethnically black. Thus we are a victim. This is horrible logic, and completely unbiblical. We all see it and experience it each time Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson goes on a march or holds a rally. Although, we are seeing more Sharpton than Jackson these days. I don't call them Reverend, because I consider them more politician than preachers, that are out to promote liberal agendas keeping blacks and other liberals in bondage. Merely, exploiting the very people that they seek to help. Portraying their fellow blacks as victims. Hence, the term victimology. The cruel act of "acting like a victim even when one might be at fault. No I'm not merely addressing a social issue but rather a theological and biblical one. Some of which stems from the entitlement mentality, as well as "Black Liberation Theology" fathered by James Cone. But this post isn't about BLT, it's just some thoughts on the victim mindset. And the other extreme by the way.

It Doesn't Matter

The other extreme is that there are some of the opinion that love to talk about "it doesn't matter." They are basically colorblind. Usually, I end up informing them, that I am a not colorblind. I'm sorry but I see color. This is also a form of liberalism. I understand that people that hold this view point are basically trying to show they are not prejudice, and usually jump all over Galatians 3:28 - There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

So, they don't see race. Hence, the term colorblind, supposing one's self not to be prejudice, I'm sorry but I see people's ethnic distinctions because God created us that way. That makes me observant, and respectful, not necessarily biased or for those claiming to be colorblind, it doesn't make one unbiased. One of the most fruitful ways to deal with this subject is to embrace people as people. We need to see our fellow Christians, as that Christians. I don't need you to start using slang, or eating cornbread, and I won't always use proper English, or eat Quiche, or have a Soy Latte. I won't say "spot on". I expect to see your personality to shine forth, and I will let mine come out from time to time. We need to be ourselves in Christ. You don't need to use brother speak to talk to me. I embrace and respect whichever culture I'm dealing with when I am around them or not, and I recognize cultural differences and distinctions as something permitted by God.

Bringing In Sheaves

What brought all this on? I had to delete a link. A fellow brother that I thought was solid in some areas, had actually worked my last nerve. I have become weary with this brother's blog post. Every blog post on this cat's blog has become a nothing but a box of whine (yes box wine is cheap, if I'm sipping wine give me a well aged bottle of Italian wine or Merlot from Israel)against the treatment of blacks in the SBC. There was some truth to a few statements and post, but the problem here is no matter how articulate one puts it, it was still an articulation of being a victim.

The greatest irony is the brother is for the most part might be a gifted writer, and even good christian thinker, the problem is it appears to be a waste of giftedness. There are many issues one can talk about within the frame work and context of the SBC, instead of defending T.D. Jakes and whatever happened with his musician at an SBC pastor's conference. Was that race related? I don't know. In the name of racial inclusion, however, no one had the insight to invite the musician from Concord Baptist Church (the late E.K. Bailey's church)or from Fred Luter's church in LA?

I don't know all the particulars. But when every blog post is about the SBC's treatment of Blacks and a few on the treatment of Women, and the solution is to propose resolutions, I believe it's a waste of time and talent.

There are too many issues out there for one to continue to deal with the same thing repeatedly,the mistreatment of black in the SBC, then and try to call it A New Blog For Pneuma Time, I'm sorry bruh, that's more like sarx than pneuma to me.

May the Lord bless us to utilize or gifts and abilities for His glory properly.

We Don't Need Another Hero

I was caught up in the concept of calvinism, and I was influenced by what I call the heroes of calvinism. While I was going through an off an on relationship with the so-called doctrines of grace, I was enamored with its heroes. The brilliance of R.C. Sproul, the passion of John Piper, and the teaching of John MacArthur. I was grabbing of a solid catalog of books, through P&R Publishing. Evangelical Press was exciting as a publishing company. I was also caught up in the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. A variety of teachers of reformed theology meeting for conferences to continue to teach, what else, reformed theology. At the time appeared to be interesting.

I was actually guilty of accepting the words of men, for several years, without actually reading Calvin, Luther, or any other so-called reformers. Whatever they said about calvinism and reformation theology I took it point blank, as gospel truth. I never check sources. They would make remarks about arminianism and jokes about the arminian perspective and as opposed to checking the sources themselves I merely took the word of these trusted teachers and theologians. Why? Because I thought of them as heroes. I violated Acts 17:11. I searched the scriptures with theological bias under those voices I listened to, and hung on their words because of their name recognition. Rather than checking to see if those things were so. Then I realized that we don't need another hero. And a valuable lesson I learned was namely, check all those old sources, which I began to do.

My Wake Up Call

Reading primary sources for myself began to open my own eyes. To my surprise I never considered Wesley a heretic, and found him to be a help. I found disturbing facts about Calvin that I didn't like, namely his double predestination which I found was a logical conclusion, as opposed to a biblical one.

I also had a major struggle with John MacArthur's leaky calvinist perspective. I mainly struggle with the fact that we as parents were raising little ungodly monsters, and he was a fine christian as child. His emphasis on biblical accuracy, and exposition always appealed to me, but I couldn't embrace his view on atonement. I certainly don't know his heart, but over the years (early 80's to the early 90's) he seemed more evangelical than he did reformed.

I don't know his motives but as an observer, his friendship with R.C. Sproul appears to have influenced him in being reformed, (again this is an opinionated guess, by listening to GTY from 88-09 I have no knowledge of that man's heart and could be wrong about that, but I stand by my opinion) I can't say that with certainty. MacArthur never fully embraced covenant theology, or infant baptism.

So it began to definitely wake me up regarding calvinism.

All Or Nothing

The perspective I had been embracing for the most part was a four point calvinist. The more I began to study calvinism, and visit the blogs of many calvinist, I found that the TULIP in the minds of many calvinist were all or nothing perspective. I sat for years as a four pointer, although I did struggle with irresistible grace, especially as it was related to Acts 7 and the sermon of Stephen.

And the next thing to fall in my mind was unconditional election, and Calvin's double predestination view I found went hand in hand. Though there are many calvinist that are not double predestinarians.

The main lynch pin that snapped for me was the protection of the hyper calvinist, v.s. the high calvinist, v.s. the hypo (low/soft) calvinist.

For the most part I found myself sliding into the hypo camp, and many calvinist would tell me I was confused. The more I read calvinist sources, I was under the impression that it was an all or nothing system. Though some don't hold to covenant theology apparently those from Reformed Theological Seminary did.

As many held to infant baptism, and a bunch of the old creeds. I found a very reliable source in addition to reading Calvin himself, that I truly believe led me out of calvinism. I went to the website of Dr. Curt Daniel, whose thesis is the history of theology of calvinism. The more I listened the less enamored I became with calvinism. Yes,he is considered an authority on calvinism, and articulated calvinism's history and theology so plain that I couldn't embrace it any longer.

Sharing A Few Thoughts

I forgot that I put a portion of my testimony on the blog of Arminian Perspectives in the X-Calvinist corner. It's amazing to look back and see where my thinking was at that time. I still hold these truths to be evident. However, I wanted to share some thoughts on my journey out of calvinism, where I basically was getting tired of where it was taking me. Namely, down the wrong road. It was basically causing me to puff up.

My blog's description was initially, "Arminian Theology" the biblical alternative. I still believe that today. That's not to say that it's the only view recovered from scripture. By that statement I mean "it is a view that is recovered from scripture." This is one of the main problems I had with calvinist when I embraced the position.

Point of Clarification

As a moderate calvinist, I never believed the arminian to be outside the pale of orthodoxy. No, I'm not referring to the liberal arminian that's another issue. But I didn't condemn the arminian then, nor do condemn the calvinist now. I longer agree with it, but I don't condemn the system or those that adhere to its tenets, or consider it heresy, even though there are calvinist that consider arminianism heresy.

However,it troubled me to hear that one calvinist had John Wesley burning in hell. I don't remember exactly where I saw that online, but when I read it, my first inclination was no, I don't believe that one. As an old school black baptist we sang, a few of Charles Wesley's hymns, most notably, "Father I Stretch My Hand To Thee". So, I was good with the Wesley's, including quoting points from John in sermons from time to time.

In the debate however, there were some issues that caused me to question the calvinist position I held at that time.

One was the statement that Calvinism is a nickname for Biblical Christianity. I thought to myself, well that would mean the rest of the christians were unbiblical? That was my thinking when I was embracing a moderate calvinist view point. My friends that were orthodox in the AME church, the Lutheran church, some of my friends in the pentecostal church that rejected word faith heresy, the Nazerene Church where a neighbor led myself and many children to faith by that statement stood on the verge of possibly being unbiblical christians. Unless, biblical christianity stood for something else.

These questions went through my mind on occasion whenever I heard or read that statement.

So, either the implication of that statement wasn't true or I didn't understand it. Perhaps it was an incomplete unqualified statement ripped out of context, or it meant exactly what I thought it meant. Namely, the implication was that other expressions of christianity were unbiblical. I was completely under the impression that this was a fallacy known as an appeal to fear. Namely if you weren't a calvinist you weren't biblical. Keep in my these were my thoughts as a moderate calvinist.

White Horse Inn

I thought at the time I listened to this program between 99-08, that this was a unique radio show. A couple of reformed church pastors (from the conservative reform churches mind you), a lutheran, and baptist seemed intriguing at the time. But the more I would listen to the broadcast it kept me with an on again and off again love affair with calvinism. The good programs kept me listening, but some of the programs just put me off. I got tired of hearing about the creeds, the catechism, as solid documents. And all the Synod of Dort, and the talk about Luther was dry at times.

I was given the impression of the logical fallacy called "snob appeal", that unless you believed like of the men doing the broadcast you weren't reformed. So, I would turn off the program and turn off calvinism. I'd turn it on and turn on calvinism.

It is in hindsight that I see that this was the beginning of my utterly coming out of calvinism.

If God, Why Evil? - Dr. Norman Geisler Takes on Christianity's Toughest Questions

The latest book by Dr. Norman Geisler. I have been a fan of his ministry since the early 90's. Although I only own two of his books. I have had the pleasure of hearing him on christian radio on more than one occasion through out the years. I appreciate his candid approach to a variety of subjects.

Dr. Geisler's Persuasion

I know that he did consider himself a moderate calvinist, and I am aware of his position in his book Chosen But Free. When I heard him on the radio today, it reaffirm something I always thought. Dr. Geisler arminian friendly in is theology. Some might classify him as such. Some don't. I love him and I consider him arminian. I decided to post a link so that he could be heard. Listen for yourself, as he was on the Janet Parshall show today. 2/10/11

A Shepherd's Perspective - On Black History

My Thoughts On This

It's another February and we will be bombarded with Black History again. I think it's okay to a certain extent. But I believe it is time for it be incorporated into American History. I believe that the contributions of Doctors, and inventors, should be categorized with the accomplishments of other Americans in American History. I have applauded for years in some of our churches that set aside a Sunday or two to educate our youth on "Black History". So they would informed and encouraged. I believe that after a period of time, I found myself perplexed. The same youth that were in need of learning Black History, were in need of help with reading, math, and English.

What About The Bible

I'm sure there are many that would agree with me and quote the faithful Galatians passage "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:28. I'm there are those that would applaud me for using this passage, others would stone me. I'm sure there are many who would still cling to the perspective that we should teach this perspective in the frame work and context of the church. I have done so in the past with the emphasis on those that were christians and their accomplishments. When I read the Bible I can agree with the great minds that have gone before with the claim that the bible knows nothing of "race" in our modern terms, but rather ethnicity. Many that argue for the Galatians passage as a proof text against Black History fail to realize that the Galatians were a people group. As well as the "Hebrews" and we have a book of "Hebrews in our bible.

I'm Not Arguing Against Black History Month

But I am arguing that there have been many Black History programs, in our churches that were unfruitful. Many of the churches in the inner city and across America do need to teach they their churches that there were "African Church Fathers". The storefront church doesn't know this while many of the suburban churches won't emphasize that fact. It has been incorporated into Church History, which isn't bad it merely needs to be expounded upon. I believe when we are exclusive in teaching Black History without incorporating others that are not of the same persuasion we build unnecessary walls. It would be fruitful to hear others expound on the African Church Fathers, in the suburbs or even the barrio (do we still use that term?) without fear of losing their church or receiving backlash.

A Call For Unity

In a day when we are suffering from a struggling economy, I believe that we should pray about making some changes in our churches.

1. Staffing - I believe we should pray about the faces of our staff. Our churches are very segregated still. In some places across the country I believe we can make the necessary change of adding others to our staff. I know we are guilty of following our own kind to church, but I believe Senior Pastors need to do ministry with other churches. Come down into the hood, establish relationships with the local inner city pastor and consider a "staff swap" if possible. I emphasize prayerful consideration. Just one associate pastor and family should consider trading places either on a permanent or a short term basis.

2. Inviting - Many of our churches can intentional add other friends and family as church members. I don't mean in the seeker sensitive sense of the word. But rather we have co-workers, neighbors, etc, that not only stand in need of salvation, but we could start with inviting them to our churches. We work and live, and shop, and attend school with someone of the other ethnic persuasion but we don't invite them to worship, we evangelize and let them go wherever. Why not invite them to our churches.

3. Incorporate a Family - I know the faces of our country has changed drastically. What I find perplexing is that many "feel called" to the mission field in another country, and some of those countries have "invaded" America. We should feel called to those foreigners right here in our own country.

No We Don't Have It All Together

I'm not the senior pastor, I'm only an associate pastor so I don't have it all together where I am. But it's a passion. We can make real history by laying down our biases, especially surrounding people groups.

In conclusion: Black is only beautiful when it is biblical. And White is only right when it agrees with Holy Writ. Judgment starts at the house of God.

Armininan And Proud

I haven't posted in awhile so I thought I would reaffirm my position.

I'm not the original author but I had to post my theological persuasion again.

1. Depravity is total: Arminius states "In this [fallen] state, the free will of man towards the true good is not only wounded, infirm, bent, and weakened; but it is also imprisoned, destroyed, and lost. And its powers are not only debilitated and useless unless they be assisted by grace, but it has no powers whatever except such as are excited by Divine grace."

2. Atonement is intended for all: Jesus' death was for all people, Jesus draws all people to himself, and all people have opportunity for salvation through faith.

3. Jesus' death satisfies God's justice: The penalty for the sins of the elect is paid in full through Jesus' work on the cross. Thus Christ's atonement is intended for all, but requires faith to be effected. Arminius states "Justification, when used for the act of a Judge, is either purely the imputation of righteousness through mercy… or that man is justified before God… according to the rigour of justice without any forgiveness." Stephen Ashby clarifies "Arminius allowed for only two possible ways in which the sinner might be justified: (1) by our absolute and perfect adherence to the law, or (2) purely by God's imputation of Christ's righteousness."

4. Grace is resistible: God takes initiative in the salvation process and His grace comes to all people. This grace (often called prevenient or pre-regenerating grace) acts on all people to convict them of the Gospel, draw them strongly towards salvation, and enable the possibility of sincere faith. Picirilli states "indeed this grace is so close to regeneration that it inevitably leads to regeneration unless finally resisted." The offer of salvation through grace does not act irresistibly in a purely cause-effect, deterministic method but rather in an influence-and-response fashion that can be both freely accepted and freely denied.

5. Man has free will to respond or resist: Free will is limited by God's sovereignty, but God sovereignly allows all men the choice to accept the Gospel of Jesus through faith, simultaneously allowing all men to resist.

6. Election is conditional: Arminius defined election as "the decree of God by which, of Himself, from eternity, He decreed to justify in Christ, believers, and to accept them unto eternal life." God alone determines who will be saved and his determination is that all who believe Jesus through faith will be justified. According to Arminius, "God regards no one in Christ unless they are engrafted in him by faith."

Calling It Quits

I have enjoyed blogging for the last 3 years. A total of 5 blogs. This being blog 3 of the five. I didn't keep this one up. I think I spent too much time on FB actually. But I just haven't kept this one up! It's all good. I will change the settings here and blog no more. If you feel that you have to remove me as a link I wouldn't be hurt over it.

By far this was the best blog I have ever done. I just failed to maintain it. It was a good run after my "Soul Theologian" blog. I think I'm a better commentator (commenting in agreement with what I like) The difference in this blog and the others this was a pleasure.

I probably won't quit blogging all together. Just a hiatus for now. Thanks.

Calvinism Not On The Rise Among Some African Americans

I have been off online for most of this month with ISP issues. So I decided to catch up with some of my friends on Facebook. Usually, I like to see what everybody's posting. Sometimes I comment and mostly I think through some issues as I look around at the posts of others. I am not on facebook to show myself mighty in scriptures and theology. I notice some of the brethren love to go all out on FB, and that's good. And it's good you too if you do that sort of thing.

I usually take a light hearted approach unless I'm compelled to do otherwise. I noticed a friend of mine, that's very astute in the word, very articulate made some comments about calvinism. Granted he used the word "reformed" but posted John Calvin's picture. This wasn't a time for me to point out the differences between Calvin, Luther, and others, yet it was a time of rejoicing!

See it confirmed a thought I held well over a year ago. Namely, most thinking christians in the African American context (most thinking christian period!) reject calvinism on the point of one of its weakest links or should I say petals. Limited Atonement. Yes, I was encouraged to see what I thought was true. The plain simple meaning of scripture on a variety of passages dealing with a general atonement speaks for itself.

To answer the scriptures, one has to go into philosophical arguments, and a redefinition of terms to come with an answer that suits their theological grid, as opposed to letting the scripture speak for itself. I commend the brother.

Since I Have Been Blogging

I have met good brethren, many of like precious faith. I have however been hit many times with the visitors that don't fit. By that I mean the "spammers" with 10 million blogs out there in the world, some people have nothing better to do than to come to good christian blogs and attempt to fill it with foolishness. Please find something else to do. I'm glad that blogspot has enabled me to catch the spam better.

The One Dimensionals

I love the straight and narrow. Don't get me wrong. Watching my daughter play guitar as the commercial says "priceless". As a beginner she's hitting all chords, like a beginner. She doesn't have a year under her belt. But I love to see her practice and play.

What bothers me is that people will come to blogs that are better than, and yes even their own blog, and yes play one note. One guitar string. Twanging on the same off key issues.

No I'm talking a brother for example committed to only one subject.Rest assured none of the brethren that I agree with or follow their blogs (which a few will go back on my links soon enough). But one that is like a broken record. You've been to their blog. Nothing edifying, nothing entertaining, just one bitter tune after another. Offer us some fruit here in the body. Make it invitation only if you will. But mix up the tune of your blog!

We don't have to agree on every point of every thing. I know there are some covenant theologians out there, but the rest of their blog posts are good.

There are actually some brothers that make good arguments for their positions on both fronts of Calvinism and Arminianism. I don't argee with the calvinist view point, but I love some of what I have read. Erwin Lutzer talked about fasting and prayer on the radio couple of weeks ago, and was on point with it! I don't agree with him on some issues but I was with him on fasting.

I just want to be real with the Lord and in my blogging. I know I'm not the best, but man, when you're harping on the one dimensional stuff, spread some love around. I would love to see a return to the word of God. Solid bible teaching and preaching. But if we expect people to be blessed by what the Lord is doing through our studying, reading, and blogging, we must be blessed by others. And stop the non-sense. I believe in using bible dictionaries, a few commentaries, (no they are not infallible), and few autobiographies, a good book or two on eschatology (don't matter what your view is to me, can we get along in love that's the issue), in addition to the word of God.

I enjoy various translations, like the KJV, NKJV, NASB, NLT, and the jury's out some of the others but that's just me. God has blessed us with so much material to build up the saints, and evangelize the lost. That's what I'm about. Not getting polarized around secondary issues.

Same Old Same Old

I went by the website of a local denomination to see what was happening. To see if there were any major changes. Some improvements in theology or ministry. There weren't any. Usually on my two previous blogs, I have posted articles by Dr. Jerry L. Buckner. He's an adjunct prof. at Golden Gate Baptist Seminary, and pastors a church in the Bay area of California. He has two articles that love, and in the past I have posted the articles, and shared my thoughts. I probably won't this time. One of the articles does deal with Christian Orthodoxy in the black church. At least the lack of it anyway. Well, as I went by this particular website it dawned on me that christian orthodoxy is still lacking.

One Of The Main Reasons

And one the main reasons I will say is because of church leadership. Pastors, deacons, and of course the people. As long as we as a culture maintain an emphasis on traditions of men, from the way we dress, and the church lingo that we speak, then the church in the African American context will remain in this current anemic state. We more men of prayer, not men of programs. At the very least, brethren that aren't afraid like a local pastor here in my area to teach doctrine. Previously, a brother stated people in the inner city doesn't need this. He thought that my view point was subjective. But the proof is in the pews. Weak pulpits (as in the preaching and teaching thereof), leads to weak saints, and sickly churches.

Some feel it isn't important, but the lack of teaching is still allowing some of the worse heresies to run rampant.

So, yes I'm sharing my thoughts this way in that Christian Orthodoxy is still lacking. And I believe we need a return to the scriptures. It starts with letting the scriptures make for themselves. Basic hermeneutics, and perhaps a resource or two on basic doctrine would help.

And yes, I'm recommending some resources.

Love For A Small Inner City Church

Can Any Good Thing Come Out Of The Inner City

I believe not only it can, but it does. I can't disclose all the details, but I was pleasantly suprised in a conversation I had with an individual regarding their church at how sound the church was located in the Inner City. My theme question at the top of the post is basically a rhetorical one. The answer was a resounding yes.

In a day and age of compromise, weak orthodoxy in various churches it was good to hear a church was not caught up in the modern day foolishness.

Sound Regarding The Word Of God

I was impressed to hear a christian, be able to articulate an orthodox position on various translations. When "The Message" is literally being treated like well a literal translation, it was wonderful to know that a church held not only to the inspiration and inerrancy of scripture but didn't give in to the pressure of the fad of the dynamic equivalent or the paraphrase, without being KJVO.

Contrast that with a particular pastor I know who was quoting the Good News Bible, like it was a Greek NT text, his favorite thing to say was "The english says" and he would go on to quote the Good News Bible. Tragic. Now, I'm not saying one has to be seminary trained to pastor a church (though it wouldn't hurt), at least one does need to under go some type of training or mentoring process to get away from these type of basic errors.

Sound In The Pastoral Position

It was wonderful to a christian also articulate a view on the office of the pastor from a complementarian position. I know the egalatarian view is gaining popularity when I look around my city and see churches and pastors swayed by the egalatarian position. And while some see this as a harmless position it does open the door to many other things. I have seen many of these congregations compromise in other areas one church in particular having Farrakhan in their pulpit.

Sound In Orthodoxy

Overall, I was deeply touched to hear a small church being faithful. Not unlike a friend's book title, I can emphatically say that "This Little Church Stayed Home", Yes, it was a basic traditional church in the hood, but it hadn't sold out to Liberaton Theology, the Church Growth Movement methodology, Word Faith theology, Bapticostal {that's the old name they dubbed the so-called Full Gospel Baptist Fellowship a marriage between the baptist church and the pentecostal church,namely it was a pastor out of the Church of God in Christ that started that so-called FGBF} Emergent concepts or other new paradigms that are out there.

Yes, I have love for a small inner city church that gets it.

We Need To See Christian Women and Mothers

And yes we need more Proverbs 31 women today. More godly women are needed. It would be wonderful to see more sisters on the horizon taking the next step in their christian faith. Being more than church members. We need more wise women, authors and bloggers sharing the conservative christian worldview.

We need more discerning women. Those that can distinguish between the Spirit Of Truth and the spirit of error. I would love to see more women discipling/mentoring the younger generation.

Words of A Skeptic

Each week millions and millions of upper middle class American citizens put on expensive dress clothes, and load themselves into SUV's and drive pass homeless shelters and orphanages (I'll say it this way, foster homes), prisons, missions, and halfway houses, on their way to a very expensive and nice church where somebody tells them how to be more like Jesus.

Let's Be Loving With Our Faith

I ran across this statement online. And I don't want to be guilty of giving the enemies of God a chance to blaspheme. I believe I need to monitor my actions, and motives. I know we are well meaning at times. But I do believe we can lose focus at times.

What bothers me at times is that many of the critics and skeptics never look at the good that christians do. We have started hospitals and orphanages to name a few. We have prison ministries, recovery programs, and yes have helped at halfway houses. Many christians are focused on helping the poor. In my hometown the local rescue mission we started by a baptist minister. However,many are out there looking for something to hang their doubts on.

May we do all we do to in Christ's Love.

I Will Continue To Blog

I am currently considering some changes to my blog. It's not personal. I am not changing my theology. I was considering sharing a few thoughts in regards to being arminian after one year.

However, I have decided not to go that route. I am considering either continue to blog on my other blog, or this one. I still consider the arminian perspective to the "biblical alternative" to the other theology(s) that are out there.

Just An Observation

There are a number of African Americans that are arminian in their theology, for instance there at least two denominations African Methodist Episcopal Church & American Methodist Episcopal Zion that are Weslyan Arminian, and the Church Of God In Christ (pentecostals) are as well. And there are churches in the National Baptist Convention USA, that are arminian (I would categorize them as classical arminians for the most part) as well. I also notice that while many in my cultural context are arminian, there isn't an explicit emphasis on arminianism. It is implicit. While Wesley's hymns can be found any given Sunday in some of the churches, but not many lectures, or lessons about John or Charles. Doctrinal teaching will go forth in some of the churches, and there are many published authors, they for the most part might not quote or bring up Arminius. These glaring omissions aren't a willful intent, but an unintentional neglect.

I thought when I began blogging that I would deviate from the norm. But now I'm not so sure. I will probably name drop when preaching and teaching. I will no doubt deal with the arminian perspectives when the situation arises. I am not going into remission, it just won't be my main objectives.

Wondering About Christians On Valentine's Day

I wonder why we don't hear more sermons on love on or around February 14?

More Song of Solomon would be nice. Maybe it's just the church in the African American context. Maybe we are consumed with "Black History Month", and wearing African attire as opposed to a sermon or a series of sermons on "love". I think it's been years since I've heard a good sermon on the subject this time of year. So here's a shot of love:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

It's Amazing

How many people will search for significance and meaning and refuse to submit to the light the Lord has placed in their lives. What's so difficult about submission to the Lord? He that, being often reproved, stiffeneth his neck shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy. Proverbs 29:1 Sometimes people are reproved by the words we speak and at times the lives we christians live. And yet the refuse to change. I'm amazed that many people reject the light that come into their lives. But my prayer is that I would see them as God would have me to see them. And treat them as God would have me to treat them. Don't know what the year holds, but I know Who holds the year. May I be pleasing to the Lord in my dealings. God bless.

The Passing Of Oral Roberts

My condolences to the Roberts family.

I First Heard Of Him

When he announced in 1987 to a television audience that unless he raised $8 million by that March, God would "call him home."Some were fearful that he was referring to suicide, given the impassioned pleas and tears that accompanied his statement. He raised $9.1 million. And I was basically a non christian at the time, and this was the thing that kept me and my friends at the time out of church. Didn't take much discernment as a non christian to see what this was about. We all knew a little something about God, and just didn't believe He worked that way.Even though, I was converted a year a later!

I Actually Met The Guy

I didn't agree with the name it and claim it doctrines. I actually met him once back in 1993/94. I was working at Lens Crafters in Santa Ana/Costa Mesa California, when he and his wife came into the store, and there was actually quiet a fuss, with the workers and a few customers that recognized him. And I was on my to lunch.

I was aware of the prosperity gospel during this time. So I felt the christian thing to do was to do my job. I was definitely inclined at that time to let it all hang out. But I was impressed by the Lord to be gracious, mainly because the workplace wasn't the time to deal with that sort of thing. I actually ended up waiting on him and treated him very graciously.

I wasn't in agreement with the prosperity and health gospel. Although, I have been what I consider "charismatic light". Yes, I believe in the spiritual gifts. Including the gift of healing. But not the Word Faith variety. Anyway, there were some non-christians, and professing christians that were "buzzing" over this visit.

Most of my co-workers knew I was an outspoken christian with a good grasp on the scriptures, and they wanted my thoughts. And I enjoyed the opportunity to share the of the gospel with some, and accurate bible teaching with others. It was a good day, and a little revival took place. It started when someone asked me was I going out to get his autograph. And I shared the truth in love. It was eye opening to some. Others were regurgitating the some old stuff. You know the old "touch not mine anointed, do my prophets no harm". My response was that verse doesn't apply to anyone in our day and age, it dealt with the king(s) and prophet(s) of the Old Testament. Actually some people saw and the truth of that passage in Psalm 105 for the first time. Quite a day in the life of a few of us in Lens Crafters.

I learned valuable lessons that day. One when you are at work do your job, first and foremost. Second, instead of making a scene in the name of apologetics, speak the truth in love with those that you already have daily interaction with, where you might experience the fruit of your labor.

Yeah, I saw Oral Roberts in person, outside of a church setting, was fully aware of his teaching, well prepared to share the truth, and realized at the time, godly thing to do was to treat him with the kindness and grace as I would any other customer. And speak the truth in love to the people I dealt with daily.

I am truly thankful for life, breath and limb. It's good to see another day. I don't a day goes by that I don't thank God for being alive. In that sense everyday is thanksgiving. Yes we are all pilgrims and sojourners. And with limited resources and a shot economy I'm grateful what I have, and what I don't have. Paul said that "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. "

And I would say that is also the secret of thanksgiving.

Getting It Twisted

Maybe I'm getting old but I have a hard time asking God's blessing on the biggest poultry, multiple side dishes, and multiple desserts, and dubbing all that as thanksgiving. I'm not legalistic, but I think I'm getting realistic. In a down economy, struggling to make ends meet I wonder if those Christians that have the ability to help others actually do. I will never forget the resentment from when I was attempting to share with those less fortunate in the community in the name of Lord and the local church, that I received from professing Christians, including the Senior Pastor's wife, and some grumbling from the pastor himself as to why would take from the church to help those outside of the church?

Oh, yeah shame on me for remembering the poor and less fortunate and showing them the love of God through tangible means looking for nothing in return. While we gather in abundance and thank God that we got it so good. Keeping in mind, many in the church are employed, and the resources came not from the local assembly but from the local association/denomination. One that has a ministry and church in the poorest part of town. One in which that pastor and many others in the local association have never gone to minister, by preaching, teaching and sharing.

And my point is we have to express gratitude regardless of our circumstances. Giving thanks in our circumstances. But I am troubled by the fact that there are some that continue in "hoarding". And many are getting fat and sassy on the blessings of God. And that's thanksgiving? No, don't get it twisted.

Not Necessarily A Fan Of Hollywood

I am with the brother that said he's not with hollywood. Although the family oriented and "G" rated genre truly does great at the box office, hollywood will continue to put out, well candidly junk. (I was tried not to use to bad of a word) I'm not a movie/film critic. And if you hit Focus On The Family's website I'm sure they will give you a decent review. As well as others. I can watch a few movies, but I prefer something that's family oriented, a good biopic, or an excellent story. The pickens are definitely slim. I won't do a "R' rated movie I can't stand the depravity.

Yes I'm Glad To Be Around

It's a blessing to live see another day. I'm blessed to a year older. I have reflected on two friends departing this life. One was a great influence on my life. And I appreciate the older I get. The older you get especially past 40 you do reflect more especially regarding the impact that you have made in this life.

I Wonder At Times

There are times that I wonder about what impact my life has made on others. I often wonder about that. Preaching many sermons, evangelizing, teaching there are times I wonder what impact have I actually made. Not in a vain sense mind you. But to the degree that God has used my life. There are times I ponder the effects of every lesson, every sermon, every witness, every profession of faith after a sermon, every response to each invitation given in the past.

I realize that those results are in God's hand. As well as how the people responded to the truth.

Live Long And Prosper

Yes, it's good to be alive. However I don't want to grow older and more bitter. I don't want to be polarized around my theological positions. No, I'm not changing my views. They will remain the same as they are now. I'm not concerned with the riches of this world, just the riches of Christ. My prayer is for my mind to hold up as I get older. And perhaps my health to some degree. Yes, I want a quality of life, spiritually. Longevity has it's place only to the degree that God is using me in life and ministry. Prosperity is fine, if it is the riches of Christ, as opposed to dollars and sense. Sure we need finances, insurance and retirement plans, 401(k). But I'd rather be in my right mind first and foremost. I'd be blessed to have some eyesight, hearing, the capacity to think cogent thoughts, concisive teaching and very clear speaking. With a slower step. I'm not hitting sixty. I'm not even hitting fifty yet. Just thinking.

Christians Need To Distinguish Between the Spirit of Truth and The Spirit Of Error

Discernment is nothing more than the ability to decide between truth and error, right and wrong. Discernment is the process of making careful distinctions in our thinking about truth. In other words, the ability to think with discernment is synonymous with an ability to think biblically.

First Thessalonians 5:21teaches that it is the responsibility of every Christian to be discerning: “Test all things and hold fast to that which is good.” The apostle John issues a similar warning when he says, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). According to the New Testament, discernment is not optional for the believer-it is crucial.

The key to living an uncompromising life lies in one’s ability to exercise discernment in every area of his or her life. For example, failure to distinguish between truth and error leaves the Christian subject to all manner of false teaching. False teaching then leads to an unbiblical mindset, which results in unfruitful and disobedient living-a certain recipe for compromise.

Unfortunately, discernment is an area where some Christians stumble. They exhibit little ability to measure the things they are taught against the infallible standard of God’s Word, and they unwittingly engage in all kinds of unbiblical decision-making and behavior. In short, they are not armed to take a decidedly biblical stand against the onslaught of unbiblical thinking and attitudes that face them throughout their day. I believe it is an act of the will, and many have lost the will to discern.

Blogging With Class

There is a desire among some brethren for tabloid blogging. I have noticed some brethren seem almost bitter. Some brethren appear to be angry. I believe we should be so familiar enough with the truth that we should be able to spot a lie when it shows up.

Unfortunately, some brethren appear almost jealous. They seem to appear so cynical that while yes they might point out some errors that exist, but how about an exposition of the truth! Whatever happened to speaking the truth in love? Whatever happened the servant of the Lord not striving? Whatever happened to the gentleness, and respect aspect of 1 Peter 3:15?

I’m concerned about many of the brethren that won’t or don’t gather facts on a individual, ministry, arminian theology or a church but are quick to point out some supposed error. There are some that are becoming so polarized that if you don't believe exactly as they don't then you'll be labeled a heretic.

Let’s focus on apologetics the right way. Making a ready defense of the faith. Pointing out where the cults are in error. Let’s not embrace a brother’s doctrinal statement, call him orthodox based on that statement then backpeddle when the heat comes. Yes thats what happened in one case.

We need to do some in-house cleaning. If there are oneness modalist out there let’s not defend them. If the Word Faith Movement teaches heresy let’s call it what it is. And not play with it.

If the calvinism/arminianism is an in house debate let's treat each other as brethren. There are some in the debate that misunderstand the position and make all poor theology arminian. Which is a category error. Charles Finney was a presbyterian shouldn't be called an arminian.

We need to lay out some biblical alternatives.

Like:

Proper hermeneutics, basic doctrine, eschatology and how we can apply these teaching in a practical way in our lives

I believe that is what Wesley was about. Which is what I love about him and his theology. And would to God, we would all make this our vision, our passion. To teach the plain truth, to plain people in plain words. Can I say this candidly, I believe that only arminianism can make that claim.

I'm suprised to know that Wesley preached the sermon "Almost Christian". It's interesting to know that years ago I heard MacArthur do a sermon by the same name. Now I wonder where that idea came from?

I Don't Have The Statistics But..

Sorry I Don't Have The Statistics

But I believe one of the greatest impacts is a father in the home. I'm not going Focus On The Family on you after missing a few weeks. After some reflection, I wanted to say whether you know it or not. But the father is vital to the life of the family at home.

Yes, the instituition of marriage is under attack today. God's design is marriage between a man and a woman. And the fruit of the expression is our children. I don't care if you're getting it right as a parent or you and I are blowing it big time. I want to tell you, as a father, maybe even father to father. You matter. Especially to your children. I could drop verses from Genesis to Revelation on you about parenting. But I just want to say from the heart being there is more than half the battle.

A Great Blessing

Our homes should be a haven of rest for our children. If you are ministry that goes double for you (and me). The pastor's home out to be a haven of rest. I think the greatest healing balm and foundation for us as christians is being a christian to our family. Huh? Yes, see we can be loving and patient with others, but at home we can be less patient, less loving with those right under our roof.

Before we do good to the household of faith, let us show our piety at home. I'm not talking about family devotions. I'm not a proponent of that anyway. But we should show our devotion to the Lord and those under our roof. And while some of us are out debating theology, blogging, doing our thing online let's not forget the Mrs. or the children.

What If They Are Grown And Gone

Call them up. If you haven't done it in awhile do it. Like the old Stevie Wonder song, I just called to say I love you. If you come from a two parent home and your parents are around give them a call. I think we can undervalue the effect of our words and love towards our family. I think they need to hear from us. Maybe I'm just homesick, but this is on my heart today.

I didn't come from a two parent home. And I realize you miss that father being there. I wish I could give you a good christian radio report that since I came to Christ my dad and reconciled and he received Christ, and we all lived happily ever after. But not so. We talk occasionally, but the truth is he's not saved, and settled in his ways in his early 70's. And my mother's deceased. I still have the affection for him as my dad. He knows the truth because there are baptist minister that know and communicate the gospel in the family besides myself. All I can do is pray for him and love him. And speak the truth in love.

But I wanted share that we need to be there for our families. Because they enemy is right there waiting and at times launching attacks. We need to be prepared. Prayed up if you will. Ready for warfare. Seeking the orders of our Commander In Chief (the Lord, not Obama).

And right now I believe the current order of the day is to love our families. The impact will have eternal consequences and effects.

Prosperity Teacher Dies

The Father Of The Prosperity Movement Died

The headlines are filled with the death of one celebrity after another. Recently, actors, actressess, atheletes, and singers have died. Death is a part of life. Someone has said that the death rate is one person, and we'll all make it. We all go sooner or later.

R.I.P. - NOT!

There are well meaning fans of these people, some of the fans have been close friends. But I'm very weary of the talk of rest in peace. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but many of the recently departed are not resting in peace. It is appointed unto men once to die, and after that the judgment. As dearly departed as they may be to some, I have to say that many as they passed into eternity did so apart from Christ. They have had ample opportunity to repent, and didn't.

The latest death was that of The Father Of The Prosperity Movement. The so-called Reverend Ike. While it has been said that E.W. Kenyon is the father of the Word Faith movement, Ike was the father of the prosperity portion of that movement.

I thought I'd redirect the details to this other brethren's website. His blogging speciality is the Word Faith and others like them. That he rightly discerns as Pulpit-Pimps.

I am disappointed that more people didn't speak out about Ike's inconsistencies. I like where he's coming from with his blog. I think he's a low calvinist though. But I think his does a good job on these kinds of things.

It Was A Suprising Let Down

I was looking around at a particular brother's website and blog. I was a little disappointed that the brother's blog didn't enable comments. I like the work he's doing and I agree with much of his assessments.

The let down was that there was video of a particular church, that gives one the impression that it is a "cutting edge" contemporary, culturally relevant new paradigm (you get the picture) church.

The Good

I didn't object to the pastor's philosophy of reaching the various generations within the church. But I did immediately discern that he was sipping the cheap wine of the church growth paradigm. He certainly knows the gospel so there's not a necessity to follow the paradigm.

The Rub

This pastor did the old generational (boomer, buster, gen-x, sheesh I didn't think anyone kept all that mess up) spiel. And then went on to put on secular music in church during the worship hour, Sunday Morning worship, and urged people to get up and move like they used too! And people proceeded to get up and dance.

It is a sad day when the hour of worship is regulated to a brief pause to do a little night club dance. But I do suppose this is what's bringing people in these days.

A Christian That Is Still A Movie Fan - But Don't Tune Me Out Yet

I Know, I Know...

Believe me I'm not into the big screen Hollywood genre. I have friends and co-workers that are suprised when I haven't seen the latest so-called big screen hit. Being a pastor of the gospel I like a good story. I will go see a family friendly movie but even those are fading into the minority. If we ignore the "reviews" and look at some of the results we see movies like "WALL-E" or "UP" do well at the box office. While Batman and Bruno get, or the latest Will Smith movie get all the hype. No, I haven't seen a single Tyler Perry movie. Not one. I couldn't tell you how they end or begin. It's actually demeaning to me to see a man claiming to be a christian dress up in drag and get sassy, portraying the stero-type of the sassy black woman. I understand successful comedians in times past cross dress to show their great comedic and acting skills but give me a break. I tire of the profanity. The same concept with some of Will Smith's movies. A supposed christian that drops f-bombs with ease. The same could be said Denzell and others that claim to be christian and are contradicting that claim on the screen for millions to see.

Which isn't to say that they haven't done good biopics and films worth watching.

However, the small screen is more appealing. And to be specific I have found Sullivan Entertainment to be doing an excellent job. There are better stories. That portray simple times and ordinary people. And I wonder why hasn't Hollywood caught on to this concept?

This is just something I do in my spare time at times. I believe these stories are better than most things released here in the American theaters and definitely on prime time television. I believe our culture has so feed into man's depravity, that many have lost the will to shy away from the sex and violence. I believe certain programs have caused many to become insensitive to matters of life and death. Thus another way to move people away from God. I am weary of great technological productions. I don't want Watchmen blasting into my mind. Give me some people talking and thinking, and a good story any day.

Here’s Something I Found Convicting

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I still wonder why certain christian radio programs don’t feature more broadcasts relating to John Wesley. There are some good Methodist brethren out there that are conservative. And there are solid brethren that hold to Wesleyan/Arminian theology.

I believe that Christian radio is doing a dis-service to the body of Christ by not featuring these solid brethren, and featuring other brethren that hold to differing theology. But here’s something very convicting from Wesley that I believe would serve any pastor and congregation well. Check it out:

Knocking On The Door Of Christian Radio - Will You Knock With Me?

I Contacted A Ministry Program

I was weary of hearing some of the same good old boys on radio broadcasts. It seems that every feature was by an author from Crossway Books! So I took the liberty to contact a particular ministry, and shared with them that while the audience is hearing from one particular group, and multiple quotes from Charles Spurgeon, I suggested that the chrisian listening audience and non-believers as well need a more well rounded view. So I suggested that there were a couple of theologians with credentials that could talk about Jacob (James) Arminius and/or John Wesley.

The two theologian I was referring to were Dr. Roger Olson and Dr. Vic Reasoner. Well, they responded with an email stating it would be passed to the proper personnel. And I thanked them.

A Comical Kicker

As I articulated that christian radio needs to hear from some of the other voices that are out there. I stated that there are some christians in the audience that have a solid background that were arminian in their theology that supports the radio station locally, and nationally. One example I gave was the Methodist church.

Yesterday, while listening intently to a program called the "Word In Song", the host prefaced a story by the Methodist "open air preacher" and evangelist, (and I thought to myself, yes a breakthrough) George Whitefield! (silent "e" for those that might not know)

Now, I know many people that know of Whitefield, would have thought like I thought, Whitefield a methodist? I had a good laughed, and thought maybe they hear me after all.

My Question To My Arminian Brethren

Will you knock with me? Will you contact those christian radio stations like Moody Broadcast Network, whatever is in your area about airing on the live broadcasts periods some brethren that are either Classical Arminian or Wesleyan Armininan in their theology?

I don't know about you, but I get weary of the Crossway authors blowing up the airwaves. How about it dear friends.

Why I Made An Addition To My Blog Description

I'm Not Trying To Be Unique

This might be a temporary change. But I thought I would make a bold proclamation that I'm African American And Arminian. Here's some of my reasons:

1. While calvinism and reformed theology is on the rise in some circles I believe it will continue to meet resistance in the African American context of the church.

2. There some African Americans that have started a so-called Black and Reformed Movement with an online presence, and few books. They haved gained some popularity with mixed results, and holding conferences while inviting some notable reformed theologians as speakers. I would like to see some arminians, blacks and whites articulating their theology on the same platform.

3. While the AME church(by that I mean the denomination), COGIC, National Baptist Convention(s) are all African American Arminians in theology many don't lay an explicit claim to being Arminian, but they are. What I'm doing on my blog is saying explicitly, "I'm an Arminian".

Now these are a few reasons for the change to my blog description. It might be a temporary change. The main thing I want people to know when the come to this blog or to any of the links on this blog, that while there are many theologies out there it is my contention based on personal study, the books I've read, the material I studied online has led me to believe that Arminian Theology Is The Biblical Alternative.

Yes, the biblical alternative to the other theologies out there including calvinism.

One More Qualifier

I am in no way advocating a "black experience" or black theology, black liberation theology. Just a biblical one. All I am articulating is that I hold to Arminian Theology and as an African American I'm pleased to be arminian. I would love to see more African Americans, more non-African Americans that are Arminians to say so.

Finally Some Balance

I was pleased to hear the radio broadcast clip on Moody, by Rick Grubbs. The random clip(s) can be caught Monday through Friday. This week's broadcast was a pleasant suprise, because the host spoke about John and Charles Wesley. It is typically about a 1-2 minute broadcast. It was good to hear someone else. I grow weary of constant talk about Spurgeon, and Wilberforce and nothing about the Wesleys. I think we do the christian faith a disservice when christian radio glosses over those that made an impact.

Christian radio was actually becoming wearisome with the same tiresome bunch as though they were the only influence in christianity. If you contrast Whitefield and Wesley. Whitefield (the "e" is silent for those that may not know) preached to literally thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands. Many believe that there were thousands of converts through his preaching. Wesley(John Wesley) is basically the founder of the Methodist Church! Yes, there are some pockets of Methodist here in the states that are liberal but it may come as shock to some there are actually a good number that are not! I have labored with some brethren that actually left their local fellowship that was becoming liberal but maintained the theology.

Many of my fellow African American brethren that claim to be theologically neutral aren't. Very specifically, the AME and Zion AME churches. These brethren are Methodist brethren. They are African American and Arminian!

Well, I was surprised from that I caught Wesley's name mentioned on a broadcast on Christian radio. It's perplexing that Charles' hymns are aired regularly week in and week out. But many times there's not mention of Wesleys' theology. I do have intentions of contacting a few ministries to ask to hear more about the Wesleys and more about Jacob Arminius on the airwaves. How about it friend would you like to join me in contacting your local christian radio station by phone or email and ask to hear more about people that are of like precious faith?

Our counterparts have been strong in orthodoxy for years. We as a church have been strong in programs, annual days, mottos, and slogans.

However, I have been perplexed by a number of issues. I see that many of our churches are weak when it comes down to christian orthodoxy. Very specifically churches in the African American context. If it is weak in this culture, then there is also a weakness within the dominate culture as well. Let’s not play with it.

This is why the Full Gospel movement was able to rise to the level it is today. This is why Word of Faith theology permeates our culture and churches. This why T.D. Jakes has risen to popularity among African Americans, and enough of us aren’t outraged that he denies the doctrine of the trinity, by redefining it. And yet claiming to believe in the doctrine of the trinity in the same breath.

What are the perplexing issues?

1) Many of our churches make mandatory that the pastors (pastoral candidates) are seminary trained but where are the African American brothers that have the education that the area of writing? By that I mean published authors. There are many subjects that are congregations could be edified by but yet, we are missing what many of our so-called educated brothers have to offer because they are not writers. And the false teachers are filling the gap.

I’m not referring to the brothers that are published authors. I’m not referring to the brothers that might be teaching in those institutions of higher learning. Like the others from some of the SBC or other conservative seminaries. But rather the other leaders. You brothers out there in the NBC, ABC, and some of the brothers in the SBC.

Message to some of the churches:

It’s okay that some of the brothers aren’t authors.

2) The truest concern should be what are some of these pastors reading?

3) Brothers and sisters does your pastor own a book on Systematic Theology? If so, ask who is the author? If it is Charles Finney, I can tell you that to he needs something else to read.

Does your pastor own at least one book dealing with the Inspiration or Inerrancy Of Scripture? Many of our churches have bible studies, we hear this man preach week in and week out, but does he have a book dealing with How we got our bible?

4) Does your pastor own at least one book dealing with eschatology?

5) Does your pastor own a book dealing with hermeneutics? That’s the science and art of biblical interpretation.

6) Does your pastor have a book dealing with “preaching”? If so ask the name of the author here as well.

You see my friends these are the areas that’s hurting our churches. I’m not saying that churches should stop singing gospel music, or that many of the programs should stop. I’m saying that in addition to the traditions, and some of the existing fellowship there needs to be a some substance added by way of more solid biblical resources.

Listen I’m not even saying stop “whooping”. It might not hurt though.
Many of our brother “pastors” need to be studied up. We hear a lot of “I feel my help coming on”.
Question? Where was the help during his study time? The people in our churches need to ask some of these kind of questions.

This Is A Great Privilege

Yes, it is that time of year. Summer is approaching fast. In order to get a jump on the Summer, I am beginning my Summer reading now. Before my head hits the pillow I will hit the "book". No, I will not be hitting the movie theathers. A vacation would be great, but because I work a 9 to 5 job, I don't have enough time accumulated for one. So, it will be a staycation instead. I'm cracking open a book and it'll be a slow read for the month of June.

Towards A Biblical Spirituality

Towards A Definition

In order to share thoughts about spirituality I believe a definition is in order. I am submitting an abbreviated definition that I believe would help me as I address this situation.

Christian spirituality begins with our redemption in Christ. We are baptized into Christ: We die to sin and the "old man" and we are made alive to God as a new creation . True spirituality, then, is not a human self-help program or a means of justifying ourselves It begins with a divine call, rebirth, and conversion wherein we admit we are helpless to help ourselves in our bondage to sin and enmity with God.

With this foundation clearly in mind, Christian spirituality has to do primarily with sanctification. It requires divine grace (first and always) and deliberate human cooperation. It is neither a passive quietism nor a triumphalist activism. (Baker's Evangelical Dictionaryof Biblical Theology).

Spiritual Need

There is a great hunger today for spirituality. People want a spirituality that works. A relevant faith that provides answers and draws them closer to God. Which should be sought out by Christ in His Word and in dependence upon the Holy Spirit.
We need a development of Christians desiring a heart-felt faith to become familiar with the Word. There is a need for a spirituality to give us more than "watery eyes and a warm heart".

I believe if we are to grow to maturity, equipped for the work of service it will be as a result of biblical teaching from gifted leaders given to the church for that purpose. (See Ephesians 4:11-16)

We need leaders with a mind and a heart for God and people.

Spiritually Speaking

Believers need to get back to the scriptures not just for intellectual knowledge but also for heart felt change and authentic personal experience. I don't think we need to shy away from the word experience, I certainly don't mean being "wild-eyed and weird". Neither am I advocating an emotionalism. Our experience should be surbordinate to the Word of God. The Bible must be our supreme authority. Yes, there should be an extensive use of the Bible among us.

There is much talk today the spiritual disciplines. And that list of disciplines varies, depending on who you talk to. But here's a look at some of the particulars.

I believe these are scriptural. I'm not sure about journaling but everything else can be recovered from scripture. What I believe we should do however is to stay away from certain authors that don't lead the christian toward a biblical spirituality but back to Roman Catholic monks and christian mysticism. So, I would advocate the spiritual disciplines this way: spiritual vitality cannot be found apart from a solid understanding of the truth of God's. And not today's so-called christian best sellers. It's amazing that there's an abundance of talk regarding spirituality and there's little or no mention of holiness, theology or staying away from practices that are similar to eastern mysticism.

Some Spiritual Balance

I also believe that theology would help give us some balance. The proper balance for theology is to result in doxology, and doxology to lead to holy, passionate living for Jesus Christ. I believe that would move us toward a biblical spirituality.

My Annual Mother's Day Shout Out

I dropped this last year. So, this is a repeat of sorts. There is one day that is revered in the African American community that takes at least third place among holidays. And that's Mother's Day. The long standing good natured ribbing of the pastor of my home church is that some people are CME's (Christmas, Mother's Day, and Easter).

I personally don't hold the opinion that it's as significant as Christmas or Easter, although many others in my culture do. Nevertheless, I am sensitive enough to my culture to put something for my mother's day.

What's On Your Christian Radio Station? Longing For Arminian Audio

A Christian Radio Let Down

I love to listen to the Moody Bible Network's Radio broadcast. On a good day you might get Jim Cymbala (like this morning 9:00 a.m. eastern time), or Chuck Swindoll (Mon - Fri). Enjoyable teaching. Sometimes there's good music.

However, drive time home does it for me. Listening to Prime Time America, news from a christian perspective. And at times there are some moments when a particular author, pastor or theologian will come on the program. I blessed last year to catch Greg Laurie on the program. Dynamite show.

But this week is a let down. Jamming up several minutes of quality drive time is time alotted for some brethren to talk about John Owens. I was very disappointed. I would like to hear on christian radio some time, talk about John Wesley. This is not to say Moody hasn't done this. I haven't heard it recently. I would love to here someone get on the air and articulate some things about Jacob Arminius.

I realize that Moody is trying to reach and minister to a broad conservative evangelical christian audience. But it would be nice to hear a Roger Olson on.

And to really bring me down during the same week, we are also being bombarded with Hugh Ross. The Old Earth creationist.

Where Are The Arminians?

I was completely let down by christian radio this week. I long for the day to tune in and hear about Wesley, Arminius, Tozer and others. And someone to articulate the young earth view to boot.

Where are the solid arminians on the radio?

Moving Towards Being Gracious

That is something we all should be doing as christians. Being more gracious. I am becoming more flexible as I get older. I still value the precious essentials of the historic christian faith. I do believe however, there are times when we can let our hearts grow cold. I love doctrine. I love the study of theology and doctrinal issues. And they have a valuable place in the church.

But I wonder as I have run across certain brethren in ministry. What happened to their heart for the people they minister to, people in the body of Christ in general and yes the non-believer in particular?

I wonder at times about the conviction or even the guidance of the Holy Spirit in their lives? And yes even at times in my own.

I believe many of us have lost our heart. By that I mean our sensitivity. I’m not talking about warm fuzzies. But I do believe christians should have a keen mind (insight, godly wisdom), and a warm heart. I have seen men show more courtesy and compassion to people in their congregations than they have for their own wives and children. May learn the reality of the fact that we must start our piety and devotion in our own homes. We need more spirituality in our households.

What Happened To Some Of Us

Some Of Us Have To Win The Argument

I believe some of the brethren in ministry have become more “polarized” with articulating their views than to be open and objective in their discourses and exchanges with others. I believe in the case of some brethren debate has caused some to grow so cold that they are more willing to win the argument, or get the point across than to let someone save face. At the very least we should allow our opponent to save face.

We Need To Leave Room For Illumination From The Holy Spirit

I believe some of the brethren in the ministry, and those that are blogging, are no longer “digging” or mining for gold in the Word, or the "gold" of truth. It is quite easy as it the old mining expression goes, to be married to the vein (gold vein). Just there digging in the mine, for digging sake no longer searching for the gold, or passionate about discovering the insight into the Word (illumination) just working to see what they can get out of it. Thus married to the vein. Not there mining for the wealth or the beauty of discovery.

Ministry Calling v.s. Job/Business

Finally, I believe some of our brethren have lost their heart for ministry, because it is not about a ministry calling. It is more like a job. Their are brethren counting numbers. And when the crowds are down they were down. This is why there has been a scramble to pick up someone’s book on church growth, and not a scramble to pick up the Holy Book. Larger crowds mean more money, ie, buildings, prestige, speaking engagements, and so forth. And I dare not leave out the fact that the cares of the world can choke out the Word. The best suits, cars, jewelry and a wife with movie star good looks. Don’t laugh at the last one, I know of several pastors that have left wives, for a younger, supposedly better looking woman/wife.

We need to get back to the basics. And it all starts with a warm heart. Thinking and acting biblically is the key.

The Good Hand Of The Lord

In 1991 I listened to good christian radio. One of my favorite radio programs was the teaching ministry of G. Mike Cocoris. I remember that I had not yet learned much doctrine at this point. I was settling into a home church at the time, but no one took complicated subjects and them made simple, clear and practical via the radio like this brethren. It helped my tremendously. It was truly the grace of God. I didn't stumble over a single point of doctrine I heard on the radio.

Then he suddenly was no longer on the air. I often wonder what my life would have been like spiritually had he remained on the air.

No Coincidences In The Lord

I find it ironic that once I fully embrace a classical arminian theology this bible teacher resurfaced and I rediscovered him online. The internet does wonders for us at times. I would like to introduce to some and present to others G. Mike Corcoris

Fond Memories

There were no sweeter times of fellowship with my household than listening to christian radio on Saturday mornings. Most christian radio has good programming for children on the air. In the Southern California area the standard of excellence in my mind was listening to the Saturday morning kids show. Great programs such as Jungle Jam And Friends, Adventures Odyssey, and the Puppet Factory made up a excellent listening. At times while these programs were designed for our kids, I found myself being ministered to as well.

Radio is about programming and personality to a degree and the Saturday Morning Kids Show had a pleasant host in K-DAVE. I am saddened by the loss.

Thoughts On Being Challenged And Other Issues

Challenges

Does being challenged with regards to your views make you angry? Or does it make you think?

I believe God uses others to stimulate and challenge us in the faith. A solid bible conference for example will present some of us with a teacher or theologian that will challenge us, stimulate our thinking and yes teach us what we need to know regarding the christian faith.

Don't get it twisted I'm talking about Christian Orthodoxy. Sound Doctrine. Good Bible teaching.

The comments here are related to apologetics in general and those ministry that are listed in the links section on this Blog. There are certain authors, pastors, and theologians that cause me to think. These theologs, pastors, and others have actually made me look at my resources and check my views according to the word of God.

Before I make mention of these particular ministries I want to make some clarifications.

With regards to apologetics:

It is a well reasoned answer for the Christian faith.

Apologetics is every Christian's obligation as well as privilege (Jude 3).

An "in house" problem within certain Christian circles is what I consider a typical response;"Who are you to say?"

If you are the in disagreement the proper response is however not the category of "who" as in who are you to say, rather the proper response falls under "what". As in "what is being said". In other words think about what is being said.

I would like to make mention of some ministries that do apologetics. Their writing and speaking is challenging. A few pastors would be put off by the individuals I'm going to mention. I will place these links on this blog for viewing the ministry of others, mainly because these individuals are scholarly and yet have a shepherd's heart at the same time.

There are many in the African American culture that seem to think the two aspects of being bible smart and having a ministry heart are at odds with each other. Not so. Those with little or no formal training (By that I mean seminary or bible college) at times seem to be a bit threatened (angered or even jealous?) by the fact that some men in the pastorate are learned. Yes I mean formal training again. I see that there are some individuals God has blessed that to receive formal training. And others are well read without formal training.

For those that haven't received formal training; here's a question?

How can you shepherd the flock of God and the text in 1Timothy 3 tells us that we be apt to teach? How does one shepherd apart from study to show thyself approved unto God? Listen brothers that are led by their emotions, the text says unto God's approval not man's approval. We are in a day when folk with "itching ears", want to heap up teachers that are "followers of fads", not "followers of Christ".

I'm certainly not saying that it is not necessary to have a degree to pastor a church. I'm advocating training. Whether it is seminary or bible college.

The other extreme is that some have entered the hallowed halls of learning without letting the calling or the biblical and theological instruction to first of all touch their own souls.

Peter exhorts us in 1 Peter 5 not to "lord over the flock, nor by constraint, rather we are to be examples. One example is humility. As I think of the various leaders that have strayed and rebelled into error many of them with and without proper theological training have refused to hear those that have come in humility to speak the truth in love about their error. They didn't respond properly to "being challenged". In the case of others they didn't respond properly to being corrected.

Ministries that have exposed those in error are listed among the "links on this website. Check it out when you have time. I think if you've never visited these websites whether your agree or not with them you might be there awhile. Soak it in. Then let it out.

Celebrating The Resurrection

Yes It's Another Year For Celebrating The Resurrection

I am a firm believe that the resurrection is something to celebrate. Christmas is a time of meditation, although we "celebrate" the holiday so to speak. My heart is glad by the facts of the resurrection. Christ rose from the dead. The final enemy to be destroyed is death. I believe we should be excited. Because Christ died and rose again.

This is stated in certain passages of scripture like the passage in 1 Corinthinians 15:1-4.

1. Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,
2. by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

3. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4. and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

This is a cause for rejoicing.

The Atonement Is Also A Cause For Rejoicing.

We also notice that in the passage it states that Christ died for our sins. Yes we meditate on the scriptures and we also find our rejoicing there. And the atonement is cause for rejoicing as well.

2. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins ; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. 1 John 2:2.

Recognizing Christ died for us is what the holiday is about.

Yes, I wish Happy Easter to the unbeliever. As well as friends and family. I love this season because there have been many people over the years that don't get what Easter is all about. So I love to share these two truths. I know it is about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. As I have grown older, it isn't a pressing issue to correct someone's understanding by saying Happy Resurrection as opposed to Happy Easter. I would feel better articulating the facts of the resurrection and the atonement than hammering the home the usuage of Resurrection Sunday and why it's a better term.

No, I'm not seeker sensitive or user friendly.

But let me say Happy Easter.

Hey every one I'm still blogging. I wanted it to be more frequent or at least weekly at best. However, I am out of it with a monster case of the flu. I've been in bed all weekend and I'm heading to the Dr.'s office today. So, I'm not neglecting my blog or the new found fellowship here in A-Land, I'm sick. A Thought On Church Planting - A Note To The SBC

A Brief Thought On Church Planting

I would like to propose a new ministry concept for associations across the nation: There are many church planters that have attempted to plant churches, and those church plants have folded, and church planters need to move back into ministry. Therefore I would like to submit that there is a need for a chaplain or a "minister" to church planters after their church plants have failed.

Is Failure An Option?

I believe we are bombarded with success syndrome. With the sale of many books and mega-churches, there is an impression out there that failure isn't truly an option. People need support for a church plant to be healthy. Only a healthy sponsoring church can reproduce a healthy church plant. I mean spiritually healthy. In the mind of some I don't believe failure is an option or a reality. It is a reality.

We have fallen into the trap of the great American enterprise. That bigger is better. We have to have the "big and brassy". I believe that many have fallen under the spell of "evangelical success". Many of our associations are preparing church planters across the nation to do basic training and that's good. I just believe the SBC and anyone else that church plants as well should have something in place to help the church plant that dies. Every church plant doesn't go on to be a fully functional church. By that I mean people and a building.

There are many leaders that in our convention and associations that need to put down the best sellers, and get in touch with churches and church planters. Put down the programs, and get back to pleading with God, and partnering with people, as well as being personable with the church planter.

And find out if a church can give both financial and spiritual support to a church planter. Most church planters won't make a big fuss, but I believe that they should be compensated for their efforts financially, and supported for the task spiritually. Church planters need more than vision and passion. They need prayer, friends, and the reality that if the church plant doesn't take off, or dies after it launches that they are still valid ministers (if they are ministers in the first place as opposed to laity) and can go on to other vital ministries.

While they may have made the mistake in the capacity of their ministry, their calling is the same. Ministers of the gospel.

But the reality remains that sometimes church plants don't take off, and there should be a formal document or at least some type of articulation from our leadership stating the possibility of failure. And there should be people and resources in place to help the church planter rebound from failure.

An Apologetic for Apologetics

What is apologetics?

Our English word "apologetics" derives from the Greek word (noun) apologia (or verb apologeomai).
It is found in many New Testament passages. See, for example, 1 Corinthians 9:3; 2 Corinthians 7:11; Acts19:33; 22:1; 24:10; 25:8, 16; 26:1, 2, 24; 2 Timothy 4:16; Philippians 1:7, 16; 1 Peter 3:15.

Apologia was a Greek legal term, meaning among other things: an answer, a defense, a verbal defense, a speech in defense, (BAG) a speech of defense, a reply.

In Acts 24:10; 25:8, 16; 26:1, 2, and 24, the word is used in both a legal sense, and in the Christian sense--as an "answer" as to why Paul believed in Jesus.

An apologetic is a well-reasoned or thought out defense, or an answer or reply and presentation of a position one holds or wants to defend or prove. In this case the cause is Christ--Christianity.
As used in the Bible, an apologetic does not mean an excuse or "apologizing" for what you believe. That is, it is not saying "excuse me" or "I'm sorry."

Apologetics is a subdivision of Christian theology.

Apologetics is the presenting of evidence and logical arguments or reasons why a person ought to believe in Christ.

This includes the whole gamut or types of apologetics and related concerns.
